The Port is really accepting of its LGBT so they don't have to deal with that stupidity here, but they still both know what it's like to come to terms with their sexualities and then to come out to those who care for them. Blaine relates to her purely for that and realizes that she's strong and powerful, so someone he can look up to in that way.
