Ahiru really is one of those treasured friends Joe would gladly give his life and his heart to protect, and in return she's probably the friend that most actively protects his heart. They have a very well balanced friendship, looking out for one another, even beyond their team ups as Puella Magi.

He's very aware of that too, that without really understanding it, she is concerned for his darkness, keeping him in check and reminding him to care when his bratty anger or cruelty gets a little out of hand. She has faith in his light to outweigh his darker sides, which is a tremendous source of stabilizing strength for him. She's something of a moral compass- while he won't listen to adults lecturing at him, her concerns and urges to stay careful always seem sincere. He's never had a reason to doubt her heart, and considers it as pure as any of the 7 princesses- particularly after identifying her Tutu-self.

He's very fond of her clumsiness and her kind nature, how easily she flusters and how naive and hopeful she can be, and Joe's still a bit baffled that she's really a duck, but quick to accept her as a whole person despite it anyway. In a lot of ways she embodies his ideals about how all girls should be- because she's a heroine straight out of a fairytale, this shouldn't be so surprising.

Roxas is a tried and true friend, Joe still considers him his first 'real' friend after Tifa, and his closest buddy. He's relieved they've figured out a new life for themselves together, proud that they've both decided who they really are, and would fight tooth, nail and heart to defend Roxas's right to his own life.

Most of their casual joking around involves Joe trying to be the older-wiser, more streetsmart of the two. He likes coming up with all the ideas of what to do for fun, and he can be a bit unconsciously bossy with Roxas, without meaning to be. He can tease over the line, but retracts with quick and genuine apologizes once he's actually confronted with his own wrongness. He would get very easily flustered/annoyed if anyone ever pointed out that their friendship worked similarly to Riku & Sora's.

He's glad that he really doesn't have to worry much about Roxas not being able to defend himself- he knows the keybearer could pretty much kick anything's ass, and counts on Roxas to look out for Namine whenever he can't be around. He's challenged in a friendly rivaling way, fighting alongside him as partners, and he does sometimes envy the TWO!? keyblades.

Jealousy over the special friendship Roxas shares with Xion and Axel has dwindled away slowly over time, as he's become more comfortable with the idea that what they've got is something just as important and treasured.
