Break's left eye was taken away by a god-like entity in his world; and he's been gradually losing vision in his right, to the point now where he's almost completely blind.

He is deeply ambivalent about his blindness, as he sees it as just punishment for some Very Bad Things he did in his past. On the other hand, it means he has to depend on other people, who want to help him, and thereby get put in danger for his sake.

He is a penitent sinner who believes himself past forgiveness or redemption, though he strives for it anyway. So having the vision in his right eye restored by an angel would shake him up on many levels.
