Bounty Hunting Event: The Wiles of Memory

Why, hello there, SP! It's RW again, your resident Deathstroke, Aslan, Xigbar, Livio/Razlo, and (most recently) Proxy One! I am here to bring you some PLOT which I have been itching to do for some time now.

As you all probably know, Death (thehighcost) and Deathstroke (terminates) took over the bounty hunting business in Siren's Port at the end of January. Since then Amy and I have thrown together some NPC bounties for bounty hunters to catch. They're all dangerous fellas and gals, but one of them is about to make some waves in the Newcomer Community.



Meet Jennifer Laniston, everyone. She's an ex-scientist from SERO as well as an intelligent, creepy bitch. For the full list of her crimes in the Port, you can check out her rap sheet on the bounty hunting page (linked above), but what is most relevant to all of you is the fact that she has the ability to manipulate people's memories. What this means is that she can selectively erase, implant, or twist around a person's memory in any way she chooses. (Nice, right?)

Well, how does this affect us, RW?

See that rap sheet Jennifer's got? She's been a very bad girl over the past few years and has amassed quite a criminal record. She's pissed off SERO (her former employers) and AGI both, HOWEVER- it seems someone in SERO has a use for her rather unique abilities. Namely, gathering intel on the Newcomer community.

And this is where you come in: your characters, if you so choose, may have the wonderful experience of being captured by this lovely, mad scientist and having their memories re-written or twisted up in any way you choose (short of turning your character into a vegetable) temporarily. All memories will be restored to normal by the end of the plot.

That sounds great, RW! How do I sign up??

By checking in here with me, of course! There is, however, some bad news to go along with this:

Since Jennifer here is going to be operating on her own, and I want to keep this realistic, the number of victims has been limited to 15 characters over the course of 5 weeks. It will also be first come, first serve in terms of sign-up so get your name in if you want your character messed with!

What if I don't want my character to be messed with? Can I still participate?

Of course, you can! 15 affected characters is still a lot, and depending on how much the mindfuck changes a character's beliefs or behavior, their friends and such can definitely notice that something is going on! Characters who have telepathic/memory-related powers are also welcome SINCE Jennifer will not actually be fixing this mess until she is caught.

AND SPEAKING OF BEING CAUGHT, at some point, I will need a group of characters to investigate these shenanigans, take this bitch down, and turn her in. Since this is a rather lengthy plot, spanning over the course of a month, I'm not going to make anything definitive about the takedown yet. The reason for this is because I'd like the plot to develop naturally, and unexpected things can happen ICly.

However, if you are interested in capturing this lady and collecting the bounty on her head, feel free to hit me up about it!

Sweet deal. What else do I need to know?

Dates! Dates are very important. The start of the plot is definitively March 11th. Ideally, I would like people to identify who the culprit is around the middle of week 3. The end of the plot is tentatively April 13th. If it needs to be lengthened, I can do that as well, but since this isn't the only time I plan on having this NPC stir up some trouble tohoho, if something doesn't happen this go round, it can next time!

Also victims: the following is very relevant to your interests.

Since the point of this plot is 'profiling', so to speak (with a side of experimentation), Jennifer will be learning things about your character. It's up to you how much, BUT bear in mind that whatever she learns will be heading back to her employers for their perusal.

In addition, since Jennifer herself will be taking precautions not to be caught, your character will not remember their encounter with her. At most, the time your character will spend with her will be about 2 hours tops, most likely during a time of day/night when they won't be missed. In addition to this, they will be entirely unaware that something has happened to them-- or at least, at first. People whose memories have been afflicted in a more mild way (e.g. memory loss or memory gain) will likely realize something is wrong; people whose memories have been entirely warped will not.

Finally (and I do hate saying this), I realize some of you may want to log out encounters with Jennifer -- which I can do if truly necessary -- but considering how many victims there are, it seems a bit unfeasible. I'm sorry if that disappoints anyone, BUT rest assured, I am quite amenable to all discussions regarding what happened before, during, and after the mindfuck.

Please note that character who choose from the first two weeks will have more mild memory afflictions, like memory lose/gain. The other three weeks will be cases of more severe memory loss/gain and memory warping so if you want a complete and utter mindfuck, the last two-and-a-half weeks are your best bet.

ADDENDUM: After giving it some thought, I've decided to restrict things to one victim per cast/player. This is to help keep things more open so more people can be affected across the board. However! If all the slots don't fill up within a week, I will open them up again. Sorry about that!

Memory Lost/Gained/Re-written: I'm not sure what specific things right this moment, but I'm thinking comparatively mild stuff—a couple of names (but not the actual people), how to make certain things at work, maybe how to skateboard. Stuff to indicate something is weird but not super life-impairing. Does the intel she's seeking connect to memories she messes with?
The Result: ACCUSING NAMINE OF GETTING IN HIS HEAD no not really. He'd definitely be aware something is weird and probably get nervous that something is wrong with him/KH-related memory shenanigans are rearing their head in this world as well. No drastic changes or regression in behavior.

The Result: Aurican wil believe that magic is dead in his world, and that it is hopeless to find it. This will make him a bit pessimistic overall in his attitude.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? She will learn about the many kinds of dragons from his world and his magical abilities, as well as the identity of his human self, as well as his plans to be a teacher.

...Actually, I think Replica will be playing a torn/slightly sympathetic role in this plot, investigating at first, figuring out early on who she is, undetected, but remaining under the impression that Jennifer doesn't have much of a choice and that SERO has in some way viciously coerced her into doing this.

After that, I think he'd actually take something of a shadowing defender/secret guardian role on her behalf, hunting down/trailing any bounty hunters who are after her to make sure she's not going to be hurt or killed, when she's caught.

He'll want her 'rescued' from the clutches of whoever he's convinced is forcing her to do this, in some way, and will probably be really invested in figuring out where her heart really lies, in the plot outcome. This may end up in a lot more conflicted feelings of betrayal, for him.

The Result: Make him jerkier? Augh, that's quite an accomplishment...

The Result: The "bath" is Joker's birth. Losing that concrete moment between his old life and new one will cause his mind to frantically scramble to cobble together a backstory. In doing so, Joker will start to feel like he's being ripped in half by his own memories, his behavior will become erratic and violent. He is very likely to suspect something is wrong but won't be able to articulate what.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? Whatever she likes? Nothing he's said or done while in the city is a secret. He IS one of the targets of SERO, though, so she might find things related to that. Like that he's been killing SERO agents who've come after him.

If he heard about someone who could alter memories, he'd be pinged, because part of him suspects that someone's been messing with his head and that Siren's Port isn't real. Maybe if she's caught he'll wake up back home!

The Result: A very freaked out Seras about knowing she has forgotten something IMPORTANT. Notable that Pip is dead and what inspired her to drink blood finally the what now? Also why is she missing an arm.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? Specifically that it's possible to artificially engineer vampires of Seras' kind, though they are inferior to the original (but still monstrously powerful). I'm sure SERO would be interested in that. And anything else she experienced in her canon.

Memory Lost/Gained/Re-written: I would like for Bigby's memory of his past prior to Siren's Port to be "replaced" with memories of the false past he constructed to supplement his new identity in the Port. In essence, he'll be made to believe his own lie.
The Result: One severely confused wolf, for starters. As the false history he's prepared as a cover involves him being a werewolf, he won't be confused about his powers/senses, but his relationship with Snow will almost nonexistant, his intel-gathering in the community will come to a halt and he'll have a crisis of conscience about the police murders he perpetrated in December. His personality will also be on the whole sunnier, friendlier and less vicious.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? Haha, a lot and Bigby is going to be murderously angry about it. Basically, anything prior to Siren's Port. (Here is his app)

Helper/Investigator/Takedown: Atlas is going to not really be involved like others might. Instead, he's going to use the mayhem and craziness to attempt to figure out what SERO is doing with this girl, how they're doing it, what their plan sort of is (nothing godmod-y, promise), and then use the distractions to try and find an in with SERO that doesn't pose a threat to him as a newcomer. When he makes his second identity for SERO, he might sell some information out to bounty-interested parties if that's okay with you, but this is just me making sure that'll all be okay and allowed.

The Result: Thinking he's the replica and not the original, and being aware of this fact, will pretty much change Asch's whole outlook on his life. He'd be more self conscious of himself, constantly questioning his existence, and probably easier to set off the handle than he is right now (hard to believe...). Considering we should have a replica Luke by then, it will probably be epic.

Yes, he's willing to use his powers, because he knows that physical discomfort can distract a telepath/psychic from doing anything mental to anyone.

Memory Lost/Gained/Re-written: I like Vincent to forget The Tragedy of Sablier which he was manipulated into being an instrumental part of as a child and still carries a great deal of guilt and grief over. I like this to be a total wipe-- he won't remember even people from that time period which would include his older brother (retraced) and some other cast mates we don't currently have in-game but may when his turn rolls around.
The Result: Ultimately this would make him far less of a threat because a great deal of his motivation stems back to "making up" for this crime, and espeically to his older brother. His canon motivation is to literally re-write the past so that he would never exist and so the Tragedy never happen. His in-game motivation is returning home to complete this death wish. Take this away and it'll probably be a 360 degree personality change. Vincent will certainly become far more stable at least if he's not plagued by this burden every waking moment.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? Well obviously about his role in The Tragedy which he keeps a secret. Also the next bit in in-game canon but first you must understand what a Chain is to understand what this plot was. Basically think a demonic contract but instead of a demon it's a creature from the "Abyss" that's analogous to some Alice in Wonderland character. Vincent has two contracts, to The Dormouse and to Demios who is analogous to the Queen of Hearts.

She's free to learn he's an AGI agent because they freed him from jail for serial killings using his Chain Demios to behead people. Even more over she's free to learn the true reason he killed those people was to cover up his younger brother Elliot's (no longer in game) murders by basically covering up his crimes with his own. Elliot was also contracted to a Chain called "Humpty-Dumpty" and under it's influence his memories were altered so he would be unable to know or recall killing people. When Vincent found out he made the choice to basically take the fall for his younger brother.

The Result: PARANOIA. He will be very nervous about how he got here, why everyone knows him, how everyone knows him... irritated that people know the things he'd rather keep secret... really set him on edge and confuse his understanding of reality.
What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? Anything of his past, found here for handy reference. She can also learn anything about his time in SP--terrorist attempts, that time he broke into SERO for a few hours, his imprisonment for attempted murder, his near enslavement.... et cetera et cetera. I can expand on these as necessary. Basically, it's all free game!

Memory Lost/Gained/Re-written: Mixed up and 'replaced' memories of his childhood and time in the SOLDIER program. It will be little but glaring things, something his friends will notice because he is otherwise really private about himself. The biggest thing he will lose is knowing anything about Zack, in the sort of one of her first removing people from memories way, fuzzy but he can remember everything else of the situation.

The Result:
Angeal's personality isn't going to be affected much in the way he interacts with people, other than perhaps surprise and disbelief that his friends are correcting him on something he 'remembers' happening with them. He'll likely be a little irritated and wondering if he is going crazy or something like that.

What is fair game for Jennifer to learn about your character? not much, as this is still in the starting out stages for her. She'll be able to glean that he's a soldier of some type, dislikes scientists (SERO by default) for human experimentation and AGI for killing Cloud's friend.

The Result: The most noticeable effect will be a marked rise in confidence. However, at the same time, she'll feel constantly uncomfortable in her own skin; it'll likely manifest as a constant feeling that something is seriously off, though she can't place it. Additionally, she'll be without the constant insecurity that she's not doing enough in the city to "earn" her humanity, since she'll believe it's her real self. She won't compare herself to others quite as much, and won't view herself as inherently unequal as others simply based on species.

Memory Lost/Gained/Re-written: All memories of hunting monsters - both in canon and in game. I'm going for a mega mind wipe here, in that her childhood memories of danger, fear, fighting, and lies would be replaced with generic, nondescript memories of ~normal. Her adult memories of lying off her ass and living in a state of paranoia would wipe- she'd remember a normal, safe, incredibly boring life, and have no memory that she's ever engaged with the Darkness here.
The Result: She will be... kind of incapable of noticing anything wrong, except people are being really weird, gosh. Less tolerance for Newcomers on the baseball diamond being rude or violent, more fear of the Darkness. She'll be more ~innocent~ and kind of... boring. Needier. Her friends and family will probably notice something's wrong well before she does.
