Shikamaru is a spy and played double agent about a year ago, which culminated in the AGI trial. He was never outed as feeding information to the prosecution, though looking back at news reports from the time, Smiley with all his experience would probably be able to put it all together. They haven't spoke yet since Shikamaru was recovering from trauma until recently, but Smiley could definitely approach him based on all that old information if you wanted one more recruit. Shikamaru's embarking on his own mission to get back in with AGI, this time through the entertainment route, but he's more intent on assassination than reconnaissance.
