Outbreak Plot Information

Basic Plot Summary:

A strange disease outbreak surfaces next week, spreading quickly throughout the city via hand-to-hand contact. The infection rears its head with nastily severe flu-like symptoms, and in some severe cases this can even quickly become fatal. As the city succumbs on a wide-scale to the epidemic, panic ensues and the public grows frantic for a cure. As false cures and wilder claims surface from moneygrubbing drug companies, demand for the cure gets violent, and riots break out. Corporations break out a new round of finger-pointing in pursuit of power, and rumors begin to spread that a Newcomer may have brought the disease to the island, causing a new wave of anti-newcomer hatred.

The Church of Jonova, a cult whose membership has slipped off in the last few months, resurfaces strongly as the city's saving grace- 'miraculous' prayer and confession sessions have temporarily alleviated symptoms for some, and fully healed others! Crowds begin to gather at the cathedral, until investigations reveal that the 'spiritual' sickness originated from within the church itself. A potential conspiracy?

Meanwhile, researchers race to understand how the disease works, to find a medical solution that will save the city.  Unfortunately, one of the long-term effects of the plot will be the development of a marketable drug which can effectively 'cure' human compassion.

Lowdown on the Plague-Nastiness

It is passed via hand-to-hand contact- a single handshake, passing off objects, or any kind of direct touch will spread it from person to person. It is possible to contract and spread the disease without exhibiting any symptoms. Characters with supernatural disease immunity will also be resistant. Curiously, those who are either morally remorseless or those who understand themselves to be innocent and blameless seem to be the least affected, no matter how much contact they have with the sick.

After contact, it takes between 48-72 hours to incubate before symptoms surface. The disease attacks those who hold suppressed feelings of guilt and shame, giving those feelings physical effects. The stronger and longer the intensity of these feelings, the worse symptoms will be. Average over-the-counter cold and flu medicines do little to alleviate these symptoms, but talking out your internal struggles does seem to help greatly. Being forgiven and accepting that forgiveness, or forgiving yourself? Cures you completely.

Those with powers of spiritual purification may also cure the disease through direct contact, though it may be re-contracted until a medical cure is developed.

Symptoms may include: nausea, fatigue, fever, nasal congestion, vomiting, body aches and dizziness.

Genuinely believing that you are unworthy of living will bring the disease to its fatal stages.
(Feel free to interpret this loosely, if you want to opt out of character death)

An immediate connection between symptoms and their catalyst will not be immediately apparent.

Timeline

This plot will be developing from Tuesday the 15th, when the first who have contracted the disease will begin to show symptoms, into the beginning of next month (June 4th), when the cure will be made available and widely distributed.

A majority of the city will be infected by the 22nd, unless they have taken special measures to carefully quarantine themselves.

SERO will be leading disease research, so keep in mind that affiliation has its advantages, and that SERO will be calling for disease research participants to be voluntary (and involuntary) guinea pigs.

AGI
affiliates will be encouraged to aim their media propaganda guns at SERO's ineffectiveness, and will eventually be broadcasting from the Church of Jonova, as cult revival reaches its peak fervor.

Newsfeeds will be the primary source for wide-scale effects and plot updates, so keep an eye on them. If you plan for a character's involvement to go beyond catching the disease or tending to the sick, please let us know here so we can include them in investigations or research!

Grell will be unaffected. He's pretty well completely remorseless. But he's going to have a FIELD DAY reaping the NPC dead, for old time's sake.

He'll even reap your character, if you're so inclined. I have in mind a Monty Pythonesque Bring out your dead scene with Grell trying to reap the not-quite-entirely dead, and having to be restrained...

I can't really do much due to hiatus but Helen wouldn't ignore this even with her ignoring the world. So backdated/super slow stuff? Come to me

Helen; is going to get screwed by this. She has a lot of canon guilt, in game guilt too and... She's not big on sharing. She may give tidbits to those she really trusts but not her biggest sources of guilt (ESP the things she thinks she caused but actually didn't but still blames herself). Debating over killing her but unlikely. She's also going to be running around trying to help people. Someone might need to convince her she needs help herself

Kitty; will just be normally affected and will do whatever Anya tells her re:hotel etc
acemedium: do to me. OOoooOOoOh (guuuurl you just don't realize what you)

Maya unfortunately is a bastion of repressed guilt and and technically should be dying, but I don't wanna kill her ;;. (Somebody want to save her? :D;;;) In any case, she will be in really, really bad shape and will have to be hospitalized. I think she will try to fuss over other people/keep going but faail

Megabyte GIVE NO CRAPS. THERE IS NO GUILT. But he might be preying on people or even collecting specimens for SERO to gain himself favor?

Anyone wanna plot? :D

Yosuke will definitely be a little green around the gills, but he'll be out of juvie from the last plot before this is over with and he will be well enough to help get people medical attention if they need it!

The community service thing might come in handy for solitary or stubborn types, actually. If you have a character that wouldn't go to the hospital on their own but you can imagine that they called off work he can be sent by with some soup or something and then get them looked after.

Franz will be falling ill around the 17th. He'll be nearly bedridden with symptoms.

Ritsuka will have the sniffles, but be able to function with ease.

Czes will be unaffected - possibly aiding Kenzo where/if he can, but experiencing more than a little bit of smirking schadenfreude.

Snake will have a very mild case of the sniffles around the 22nd, unless exposed earlier.

Zevran will be getting only a little bit sick, and trying his very best to cover it up. He is surprisingly remorseless for someone who kills people for a living. Or maybe it's not surprising at all...

Vriska will be getting a small cold at best, but she'll be acting like it's the plague. Is it because she really think it's that awful, or she just wants to make everyone else worse off feel bad? Who knows!

Two super-immune characters and one guy who feels absolutely no guilt or responsibility about murdering people any more. Welp.

I only wish to chime in that I hope the drug is being called Prozium. Just saying.

Amaterasu will be unaffected by the plague. If anyone would like to be cured using her, feel free to hit me up!

Larry tends to blame himself for things that go wrong at times - because they really do go wrong because of him, but still - but he's not one to repress feelings for so long, that's how he rolls.

Right now, he doesn't feel guilty of anything, BUT he will try to help all his friends who end up sick. So in the end, he might end up coming down with a bit of the "flu". Nothing more serious than that. Unless someone tells him to please take all necessary precautions and make sure he doesn't touch anything. Please.

Alucard: ... is probably going to get sick. Not terribly sick, but he's going to be a pain in the ass.

Loki: Is going to fall very ill, then miraculously recover because you know what, it's canon. FUCK YEAH.

Oh boy...

Richard Alpert: Will be getting seriously ill. He's got some suicidal/worth issues already. Add his guilt into that and he's just kinda screwed. However, I don't think he'd die, just get close to it.

He'd probably be willing to talk to someone. :|a

Johnny Rayflo: Is so incredibly fucked. He doesn't believe he deserves to live and he's got 500 years of built up guilt just from existing so...I don't see him...living through this... ;; UNLESS there's a Vampire Whisperer around who can get him to talk it out.

That said, I don't know if he'd ever forgive himself. ;;

Meg is going to be pretty much okay, though she'll have a hell of a headache near the end (pardon the pun) over the fact that she's the only demon left on the loyalist side, she failed BOTH father figures, and insult to injury, CROWLEY ISN'T DEAD YET. So really, Meg with be fine for a decent amount of time and then sloooooowly start to see symptoms and become a royal bitch because of it.

Trauma Is going to be a very unhappy camper, very very quickly, and will probably be a grey unhappy creature in the attic before too long. I'm not sure if he'll be kicking the bucket at all during this event, though it would not surprise me.

thanks to his port ability, john is going to be unaffected by this pandemic. he'll go around doing his job, and treating the people who are admitted to hospital, but only up until sherlock falls ill. after that, he'll be investigating on his behalf and... yeah, that's about it.

Szayel will be completely immune. I think the only person more morally bankrupt than him is Mayuri, and he's not here.

Asch... might be a little twitchy. He expresses guilt by yelling more. Sorry Angeal.

Soma is completely boned. :|b

Kanaya is going to be an absolute wreck, there is way too much guilt being carried around about her various failures to live up to her promises to her Grub Mom about continuing the species and being a crappy minder to Vriska.

Technically she's already dead but she's going to be even...deader...

Jake will have... a light case of the sniffles. BUT since school is out I'd love to have him running around helping as many sick people as possible, so if anyone is interested in CR from this either from having an assistant in caring for others or being cared for, I'd be all over that!

Nill is definitely going to be sick enough to be hospitalized, but she'll be actively refusing to go to any hospital or doctors on her own, so she might need to be dragged to one. Yeaaaah.

Needless to say, I am definitely open for plotting.

Eric and Dorian will BOTH come VERY close to death. However, the things Eric has done were to save Alan, and ultimately Alan is a worthy cause in his mind.

Dorian will be saved by his own self-love and self-obsession. And, by his belief that he is too awesome to deserve death.

However, they're going to be VERY sick.

Jacob will be seriously affected, due to the fact that he feels so much guilt over what happened with his twin brother back home, as well as the thousands of deaths he was partially responsible for. WHO WANTS TO HELP A NOT!GOD GET OVER HIS VERY VULNERABLE HUMAN FEELINGS? ;;

Anthony J. Crowley actually doesn't have too much guilt over his shoulder, so he'll have a migraine but otherwise, not be affected.
dilemma: &s (like resignation to the end.)

Damon will be entirely unaffected, since he's normally immune to disease. He does have a lot of suppressed guilt buuut he's also pretty remorseless /kanye shrug.

THAT BEING SAID, anyone looking into cure some of the people who are really bad off and want to use his immunity as fodder are free to. They might even be able to coax a sample of blood out of him?

Jim Moriarty is a remorseless monster who will have absolutely no physical contact with anyone if he has anything to say about it. At most he might get a headache or something towards the end. I plan on having him keeping a close eye on whats happening and possibly swooping in to attempt to get SERO and AGIs attention during the debacle.

Kevin: HAVING TO WEAR GLOVES ALL THE TIME IS AWESOME SO THERE!

No, really. He can't have skin to skin contact without killing someone, so... yeah, even though he's guilty as hell, he'll be fine.

Jubilee: Most of her guilt/shame is wrapped up in her crucifixion and thus the death of Angelo Espinosa. She'll get a cold, but nothing too bad.

Byakuya: Already posted about him dying on Sunday.

Ellen: Is going to get a major case of the flu. She'll probably end up really dehydrated, so... Doctor folks?

Mercy: Will be fine. She only feels guilty for one thing and she got over that because she helped kill the folks that did it (revenge is a wonderful thing!). So, she's willing to help out anyone who needs it.
