That doesn't mean he doesn't try, that doesn't mean he doesn't love those he considers his children, that doesn't mean he isn't truly, deeply sorry when he screws up.
And he does love Ahiru. Very much. It's nothing more complicated than that - she holds the same place in his heart as Luna, Jubilee, and Katherine do. His granddaughter. If asked, there is nothing he wouldn't do for her, and no lengths he wouldn't go. If her life was at risk, he'd give everything to save it.
But he's not sure how close he is allowed to be. He knows there are other people in her life, and he's aware that there's a price on his head. He's afraid that being close to her puts her at risk, and that's not a risk he's willing to take.
And it hurts. He's had to make that choice before, with Luna, to spare her the danger being linked to him presented. And he's worried he has to make that with Ahiru, and he's willing to, to keep her safe - but he doesn't want it to come to that.

In some ways, Jubilee reminds him of himself, before he fled Germany, and he wonders how much is what her natal personality is, how much is a reaction to all the shit being a Mutant makes you go through, and how much is a reaction to all the shit being an X-Men puts you through. There are times she'll say or do something that will make him grit his teeth and walk away, because shouting won't help. Not that he won't shout at times. Not that there aren't others when she makes him laugh in delight.
She's probably the grandchild he has the closest relationship to, the one that despite not being a teenager has taught him the most - even more than the New Mutants - how to deal with them. He's found he has more patience for those he loves than he thought he did, more ability to love and open up than he thought he did and as much as he is grateful for that, it scares him too. A lot. Jubilee is a huge chink in his emotional armor and he's waiting for the day someone tries to use that against him, because he's certain that will happen.
He's very sure she won't up and leave him, but not completely sure and that scares him too.
But what scared him most was nearly losing her.

He knows timeline issues are the cause and Warren's injuries are making it worse but damn he was ready to thump Warren's skull a few times.
But he's so glad to see him. In part because the O5 are a huge anchor for all of them, in part because he's hoping Hank will show up next. But he's also glad Warren is there so he can try to help what happened - he doesn't know if this will change anything back home, he doubts it will, but he's so glad he has the chance to do so.
Eric:
He's really really worried about him. And he cares about Eric, but he can't help but he peeved at him. Because he warned Eric and Eric wouldn't listen. It bothers him, a lot. He really does see Eric as an emotional teenager despite his age, and he knows how unstable that can make you.
But he also feels sorry for him. Because he's been there, and he knows how much it hurts - but he hates Eric's mentality of "we're so different nothing you've been through could compare".

Oh Kevin. He has so many feelings about Kevin. He can't call it love, because it's not. It's worry, fear, guilt, appreciation, admiration, and an intense violently protective drive.
He knows Kevin needs him. Probably doesn't want him in his life, but needs him. And he hates that between Warren and Lucifer he just does not have the resources. And he knows someone older would understand it's a matter of triage, of putting out the deadliest fires first but he knows that puts Kevin further down the priority level, doesn't give him the attention he needs and god he hates it.
He'll never not feel guilty about this, even if it works out.
And yet he is so very angry about what's happened to Kevin. He wants to shake Emma and Scott, wants to promise Kevin he'll fix things - all of which he knows he can't do. But that doesn't mean he has to be happy about it.
However he did learn a hard, painful lesson with Pietro - he can't force himself into Kevin's life. So he's trying to be patient and be there for him
