Considering there appeared to be some sort of fuss when he arrived, Snake did approach Chris because he was worried (and couldn't see what happened), he's just bad at feelings. He would categorize Chris as brash and guarded. Sadly, he completely regards Chris as his intellectual inferior and isn't quite sure if he'd be worth any more effort. His experience with guys like Chris is they can't deal with people who are smarter than them, and they're usually filled with a lot of stupid notions about what kind of help Snake requires. Still, he finds him amusing at least, so there's that.

Yeah, Chris is really not super educated in the stuff that Snake would know about, come to think of it. His talents lie in magic. He's been a pretty average student in other places.

He can be pretty amusing though! Not that he'll be pleased to be described that way.
